‘Salcombe and Hope Cove Lifeboat Stations – Celebrating 150 years’ by Roger Barrett

The fascinating history of Salcombe and Hope Cove Lifeboat Stations has been brought to life in a new 162-page book written by Salcombe Lifeboat Museum Curator, Roger Barrett and published by the RNLI in its Station History series. Timed to coincide with the 150th anniversary of the RNLI’s presence in Salcombe, the book tells the story of the brave volunteers and their lifeboats which, since 1869, have launched on service over 1600 times and battled against the elements to save nearly 500 lives and bring a further 1350 people to safety.

The new book it is to be formally launched at a special event in Cliff House, Salcombe at 5pm on Wednesday March 27th with the Broadcaster and Marine Biologist Monty Halls lending his support.  The event, which is free and open to all, will include a short presentation, with slides and selected readings, by the author, followed by book signings.

‘Salcombe and Hope Cove Lifeboat Stations – Celebrating 150 years’ is also available from the Lifeboat shop (weekends only until April 1st), Helly Hansen, Fortescue Inn, Salcombe DIY, Luscombe Maye, Will Bees Bespoke, Salcombe Yacht Club and Salcombe Garage and, in Kingsbridge, at the Harbour Bookshop. RNLI Salcombe Festive Gathering & Calling ‘Old Salts’

Following carols on Whitestrand on Thursday 20th December, there will be a gathering in the Ships Bar of the Fortescue Inn to which all ex-crew are invited.
It would be great to see as many ex-crew, shore crew and enthusiastic supporters as possible to share memories, celebrate the festive season and discuss next years 150th Anniversary celebrations and enjoy a pint or two. There will also be pizza for those requiring sustenance.

Calling Old Salts for Remembrance Sunday

As usual, the Salcombe Lifeboat Crew will be parading at this year’s Remembrance Day parade on Sunday 11th November.  We would love to see former crew, shore crew and station officers at the parade and hope to form a platoon just aft of today’s crew.  No need to let us know – just dust off your blazer, pin your medals on and assemble at the Station at 1000 on Sunday.

150th Anniversary Year Launch Dinner

80 friends of Salcombe Lifeboat were treated to a fantastic dinner last night courtesy of the very generous South Sands Hotel.  The main aim of the dinner was to bring together supporters at the start of the 150th anniversary year, feed and water them well and hopefully gather some much needed funds for Salcombe Lifeboat.  Due entirely to the commitment and support of our generous prize and other donors, this mission was well and truly accomplished and we raised a substantial sum on the night.  A special thanks to all our sponsors and guests.

The South Sands Hotel, Luscombe May, Prue Leith (who has a new book out), The Salcombe Distilling Company, Salcombe Brewery, Steevenson Wines, The Private Cellar, the Milbrook Inn (Southpool), Glebe House B&B (Southpool), Helly Hansen, Beatrice Jenkins Scarves, Bibendum Wines, Celtic Fish & Game, Brixham Shellfish, Cornish Farm Produce, Forest Produce, and Salcombe Dairy.
